Originating from the brewery’s roots in Rathmullan and now brewed in their Letterkenny facility, Scraggy Bay captures the essence of craft beer with an Irish twist.

Tasting Notes

Appearance:
Scraggy Bay pours a golden ale with a gentle haze and a fluffy, white head that lingers and leaves soft lace along the glass. 

Aroma:
The aroma greets you with citrus-forward character: think grapefruit zest, fresh lemon, maybe a hint of orange peel — underpinned by subtle pine and a touch of tropical fruit. 

Flavour:
On tasting, the hops take centre stage: juicy citrus and tropical fruit notes give way to resinous pine and a firm but well-balanced bitterness. A smooth biscuit-like malt backbone supports the hops, lending some subtle sweetness and rounding out the profile. The finish is clean and slightly dry, making it refreshingly easy-drinking.

Mouthfeel:
Medium-bodied and crisp with a moderate carbonation, Scraggy Bay delivers a refreshing and balanced mouthfeel. The bitterness lingers pleasantly without overwhelming — clean, dry, and satisfying.

Brewery Background & Heritage

Kinnegar Brewing was originally established in a farmhouse in Rathmullan, Co. Donegal. The brewery’s name comes from the nearby beach (Kinnegar Beach), a nod to its coastal heritage along the Wild Atlantic Way. 

In 2017, as demand grew, the brewery relocated to a modern, state-of-the-art facility in Letterkenny — while retaining its core philosophy of unfiltered, unpasteurised, naturally carbonated beers, reflecting a commitment to traditional farmhouse-style brewing infused with contemporary hop-driven styles. 

Among its core range, Scraggy Bay stands out as the quintessential Irish IPA — often nicknamed “Yellowcap.”
