How to Choose a Beer Gas Regulator

A beer-gas regulator reduces the high pressure inside a cylinder to a controlled pressure suitable for a draught system. Choosing the correct regulator starts with the gas cylinder and valve, not the beer tap.

What Does a Beer Regulator Do?

The regulator controls the pressure supplied from the gas cylinder to the keg. It does not cool the beer, change the gas blend or correct an incompatible coupler. A balanced pour depends on gas, pressure, temperature, line resistance and the correct tap working together.

Start With the Gas Type

Many lagers, ales and ciders use food-grade CO₂. Guinness Draught uses 75% nitrogen and 25% CO₂ mixed gas at 35–38 PSI in the correct Irish draught setup. The regulator must be designed for the cylinder valve, gas and pressure range being used.

Do not force a regulator onto a cylinder or use an unapproved adaptor. A connection that appears similar may use a different thread or sealing method.

What Do the Gauges Show?

A dual-gauge regulator commonly uses one gauge for cylinder contents or inlet pressure and another for controlled outlet pressure. Gauge behaviour varies with gas and temperature, and a high-pressure reading is not always a precise measure of how much liquefied CO₂ remains.

Read the labels and scale on the exact regulator. Do not assume the red, green or numbered area on one model means the same thing on another.

Primary and Secondary Regulators

A primary regulator connects to the cylinder and reduces its pressure. A secondary regulator can provide separately controlled pressure to another product line after the primary stage. This is useful when serving drinks that require different pressures, but the system still needs compatible gas and correctly rated components.

Wall-Mounted or Cylinder-Mounted?

A cylinder-mounted regulator connects directly to the bottle. A wall-mounted primary regulator can support a more permanent installation, provided it is installed with the correct high-pressure connection and components. Choose according to the equipment specification and safe cylinder position, not appearance alone.

How to Choose the Correct Regulator

  1. Identify the exact gas: CO₂ or a stated mixed-gas ratio.
  2. Confirm the cylinder valve and regulator connection.
  3. Check the regulator's inlet and working-pressure ratings.
  4. Confirm its outlet fitting matches the gas line.
  5. Check whether one or several separately controlled keg pressures are required.
  6. Match the complete system to the beer and dispense equipment.

Regulator Safety

  • Keep the cylinder upright and secured.
  • Use pressurised gas only in a ventilated area.
  • Inspect threads, washers and seals before connection.
  • Never use oil or grease on a cylinder valve or regulator.
  • Open the cylinder slowly and check connections using an approved leak-detection method.
  • Close the cylinder and safely release downstream pressure before disconnecting equipment.
  • Do not use damaged, corroded or unlabelled equipment.

Common Regulator Problems

Pressure Will Not Rise

Check whether the cylinder is open and contains gas, whether an inline valve is closed and whether the adjustment mechanism is being used correctly. Do not dismantle a pressurised regulator.

Pressure Keeps Falling

Close the supply and check the system for leaks. Inspect the cylinder connection, regulator outlet, gas line and coupler using an approved method.

Beer Is Too Foamy

Do not assume the regulator is the cause. Check beer temperature, gas type, line length, line diameter, coupler, tap and cleanliness before changing pressure repeatedly.
