How to Set Up a Home Draught Beer System

Building a home draught beer system is much easier when every component is matched correctly. The keg, coupler, gas, regulator, beer line, cooler and tap all work together, so choosing one part without checking the others can lead to leaks, excessive foam, flat beer or a system that will not pour.

1. Choose the keg and beer first

Start with the beer you want to serve. Different keg formats use different connectors, gas types and cooling arrangements. A full-size stainless steel keg does not connect in the same way as a PerfectDraft, Blade or 5L mini keg.

2. Match the correct keg coupler

The coupler, sometimes called a tapping head, locks onto the keg valve. It provides separate connections for gas entering the keg and beer leaving it. Couplers are not universal: breweries and keg formats can use different systems.

3. Select the correct dispense gas

Gas maintains pressure inside the keg and pushes the beer through the line to the tap. Many lagers, ales and ciders use carbon dioxide, while Guinness and other nitrogenated stouts normally require an appropriate mixed gas. The correct choice depends on the drink, dispense system and serving conditions.

4. Connect a suitable gas regulator

A regulator attaches to the gas cylinder and controls the pressure supplied to the keg. It should be suitable for the cylinder, gas and draught application you are using. The regulator gauge helps you monitor the system, but the correct operating pressure varies with beer style, temperature, line length and equipment.

5. Fit the beer and gas lines

The gas line runs from the regulator to the gas inlet on the coupler. The beer line runs from the product outlet on the coupler towards the cooler and tap. Use food-safe line of the correct internal diameter and make sure every cut is clean and square.

6. Keep the beer properly cooled

Beer must remain cold enough for the chosen style and system. Warm beer releases carbon dioxide more readily, which is one of the most common causes of a foamy pour. Cooling only the glass or tap will not compensate for beer that is too warm inside the keg or line.

7. Choose the tap or beer tower

The tap is the final control point before the beer reaches the glass. A standard lager or ale tap and a stout tap are designed for different pouring characteristics, so the tap should match the drink being served. A tower can hold one or more taps and provides a tidy permanent finish for a counter or home bar.

8. Assemble the system in order

  1. Position the keg and cooling equipment securely.
  2. Confirm that the gas cylinder is upright and stable.
  3. Connect the regulator to the correct gas cylinder.
  4. Attach the gas and beer lines to the correct ports.
  5. Fit the correct coupler to the keg.
  6. Connect the beer line through the cooler, where required, and on to the tap.
  7. Check every connection before introducing gas.
  8. Open and adjust the system gradually, checking for leaks and pour quality.

If you smell gas, hear an unexplained leak or cannot identify a connection, shut the gas supply and seek advice before continuing.

9. Balance pressure, temperature and line

A good pour depends on the whole system being balanced. Excessive pressure, warm beer, an unsuitable line or incorrect pouring technique can create too much foam. Low pressure, a gas leak or poor connection can produce a slow or flat pour.

Change only one setting at a time and allow the system to settle before making another adjustment. This makes it easier to identify the real cause rather than creating several new variables at once.

10. Clean the system regularly

Beer lines, taps and fittings must be kept clean. Residue and microbial build-up can affect flavour, aroma, head retention and flow. Follow the cleaning instructions supplied with your equipment and use products intended for draught beer systems.

Replace worn seals, damaged line and single-use components when required. Cleaning the glassware also matters: detergent, grease or rinse residue can quickly ruin the head on an otherwise well-poured pint.

Common first-pour problems

  • Mostly foam: check beer temperature, pressure, line arrangement and whether the keg has settled.
  • Slow or flat beer: check the gas supply, regulator setting, connections and possible leaks.
  • No beer: confirm that the coupler is fully engaged, the gas is on and the beer line is not kinked.
  • Leaks: shut off the gas and inspect each fitting, seal and line connection before restarting.
  • Poor stout head: confirm that the keg, mixed gas, pressure and stout tap are designed to work together.
