5L Mini Kegs in Ireland: Pints, Storage & Dispensing

5L Mini Kegs in Ireland: Pints, Storage & Dispensing

A 5L mini keg is a compact way to serve beer at home without committing to a full-size pub keg. Five litres equals approximately 8.8 Irish pints before allowing for foam or beer left in the keg.

This guide explains how 5L beer kegs work, how to chill and pour them, and why the instructions on the individual keg matter. Browse the current 5L mini keg range in Ireland.

How Many Pints Are in a 5L Keg?

An Irish pint is 568 ml, so a 5L keg contains approximately 8.8 pints. In practice, expect slightly fewer full servings if the first pour is foamy or some beer remains inside.

Serving size Theoretical servings from 5L
568 ml Irish pint About 8.8
500 ml glass 10
330 ml glass About 15

Not Every 5L Mini Keg Works the Same Way

Some 5L kegs have an integrated gravity tap. Others are internally pressurised or designed for a specific dispenser. Never assume that two containers of the same size use the same tapping method. Read the label and product description before buying accessories or opening the keg.

Do You Need a Machine?

Many traditional party kegs can be poured from their built-in tap, while certain pressurised formats use a compatible dispenser or tap system. A 5L keg does not fit a BLADE machine or PerfectDraft machine simply because it is smaller.

  • BLADE machines use dedicated 8L BLADE kegs.
  • PerfectDraft machines use dedicated 6L PerfectDraft kegs.
  • Conventional home bars use the coupler and equipment specified for the full-size keg.
  • 5L kegs must follow the instructions for that exact package.

How to Chill a 5L Mini Keg

Chill the keg thoroughly before serving. A 5L container takes longer to cool than individual cans or bottles, so refrigerate it well in advance and keep it upright. Do not freeze it: freezing can damage the package and beer.

Keep the keg away from direct sunlight and heat during transport or an event. If it has been moved or shaken, allow it to settle before opening.

How to Tap and Pour a 5L Keg

  1. Read the opening and venting instructions on the keg.
  2. Place the cold keg on a stable surface with room for the glass beneath the tap.
  3. Prepare the integrated tap or compatible dispenser as instructed.
  4. Vent only when the instructions tell you to do so.
  5. Open the tap smoothly and hold the glass at approximately 45 degrees.
  6. Straighten the glass as it fills and close the tap fully between pours.

If the tap design differs from these general steps, follow the package instructions. Do not pierce, modify or pressurise a keg unless it is specifically designed for that equipment.

Why Is a 5L Keg Pouring Foam?

  • The beer is not cold enough.
  • The keg was shaken or transported immediately before opening.
  • The vent or tap was opened incorrectly.
  • The glass is warm, greasy or has detergent residue.
  • The tap is being opened only partly, creating turbulence.

Start by cooling and settling the keg. Do not attempt to release pressure by damaging the container.

How Long Does an Opened 5L Keg Last?

There is no single freshness period for every 5L keg. It depends on whether the system prevents air entering, the beer, refrigeration and the manufacturer's instructions. A gravity-dispensed keg that admits air generally loses quality faster than a sealed pressurised format.

Keep an opened keg refrigerated and follow the period stated on its label or product page. Discard beer if the keg leaks or the beer develops an unexpected smell, flavour or appearance.
